The island of Bali boasts rich traditions of music and dance. The most representative musical form is gamelan. Gamelan consists of different kinds of percussive instruments made up of metal keys and gongs. Its status equals that of orchestra in Western classical music. Gamelan has many varieties and regional differences. This course will center on the two kinds of gamelan that NTU owns, namely gamelan angklung and gamelan kebyar.
The course will introduce the students to the important features of Balinese gamelan in general. Then it will focus on hands-on performance practice, including respect for instruments, basic techniques, and ensemble playing.
This is a month-long intensive course, starting from May 5 and ends on June 4. There will be 3 evening class meetings each week, 3 hours per meeting. The last week of class (from June 1 to 4) will be nightly intensive practice, followed by two concerts on June 5 and 6. Each student needs to submit a final essay after the concerts.
I will teach the students my own compositions as well as canonic pieces. I will also share my decades of experiences in performing, composing, and teaching Balinese gamelan.

1. Experience and enjoy gamelan playing in class and in concert.
2. Understand the musical structure of gamelan.
3. Understanding the important role of gamelan in Balinese culture.
4. Enhance broad-mindedness and respect for other Asian cultures through music and dance. 
課程要求
1. Please be on time. If you cannot attend class, you must take leave in advance.
2. Two-hour practice outside of class each week.
3. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited.
